The single most important step by far: Get a copy of the SRP Plant List!!! Every plant you will see is on that list; if it isn't, I want to know about it.
There are 636 taxa recorded in the entire SRP region; ~380 are at the SRPER. Of those, there are ~195 noticeable flowers, shrubs and trees found on the trails, with ~109 being common. Roughly 125 taxa appear on one or more of the monthly "plants in bloom" lists from Gordon House.
Three different approaches:
Walk the trails with someone who knows the plants.
Use plant pictures.
Learn how to key out plants.
