Iceland is an above-ground portion of the mid-Atlantic spreading center, probably augmented by a hot spot volcano (or something similar to it), with much similarity to the Santa Rosa Plateau of 10 million years ago.
Spreading centers usually erupt along rift zones:

And don't forget the hot springs and pools that we must have had 10 million years ago!
Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii also has most of its eruptions from a rift-zone:
